It's been 20 years of Lego Harry Potter, can you believe it? This in no way makes me feel like an old lady *ahem* but just as a frame of reference, I was still in middle school when the first Lego Harry Potter sets were released and my love of good old HP predates my love of Lego so for me today's announcement took me back. A while back...
Lego likes to celebrate anniversaries in style and they are bringing the gold again this time around - gold minifigs to be exact. While there are rumours that there will be TEN gold figures, today's release including only six and without further ado, let's start with the titular character, Harry potter himself...
While this is a new version of Harry in his school uniform, the crest is slightly different then we have seen before; it's still very much the same. It kind of has to be. That being said I really like the "sparkle" detail they added to make these figures look like to are "gleaming" and I love that the entire thing, including the base is gold. This is a departure from the Ninjago gold minifigs which had pops of colour and I have to say that I like the solid gold better, at least for the Harry Potter figures because it gives them a statuesque quality. Rumour is that Harry will be included in the girls bathroom set.
Next up, Professor Snape. Again not too different from what we have seen before expect in gold. I wish they had carried the robes down onto the leg piece like they did with 2018 version because it kind of looks like he is wearing cardigan - a sparkling cardigan at that and I know I said I really liked that "gleaming" effect before and I still do - it just doesn't fit this character quite as well. And, yes - I understand that they styled it this way as throw back to the original which I totally get. I still feel like a little bit of leg printing would have made this minifig SO much better. Still not sure which set we can expect Snape to be included with so we will have to wait and see.
Ah, Professor Quirrell. There has been some confusion online as to why Quirell would be included in this release - maybe because he isn't the most popular of HP characters and only showed up in one book? I mean, that's a good point however from what I've read and heard about the Harry Potter 2021 sets to come this character choice isn't that surprising. Lego Harry Potter seems to be returning to it's roots and maybe using some time turner magic to take us back to the very beginning. If this is the case, Quirrell is a natural choice as he was our first introduction to the dark lord and our first villain. In terms of design, this figure looks exactly like what we have seen in pervious Quirrell minfigs and I don't have any problems with it. What set can be expect him to show up in? It's anyone's guess at this point.
Hemione, Ron and he who shall not be named were also all included in today's release. There isn't anything new about the designs from what I can see, except for the crest on the school uniforms. I still love the gold for these and I have no complaints about the design. As for where we will found them, Hermione is rumoured to be included in a Hogwarts expansion set, the dark lord could likely be included with the Hogwarts Castle set and Ron, for reason's unknown may be included in the Hogsmeade set. These are rumours at this point but I expect that since Lego has officially announced these golden master pieces we could have concrete answers soon.
Until then, which character do you just have to have for your collection? Let me know in the comments!
